Important Information About Your

Telephone Dialing Procedure!

Due to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopting 988 nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, a new telephone dialing procedure will be required beginning December 12, 2021.

What will change?

You will be required to dial your area code and the seven-digit telephone number on every call, including local calls within your same area code. Please find your area listed below:

Action to Start Now:

All services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment that are programmed to dial a 7-digit number will need to be reprogrammed by adding your area code to the beginning of the number. (example: 337-555-5555). This should be completed by December 12th.

If you do not use the new dialing procedure beginning December 12th, your calls will not be completed, and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again using the new 10-digit dialing procedure.

Examples of automatic dialing equipment

Life safety systems and medical monitoring devices Alarm and security systems or gates. Many systems operate on 1+10-digit or 10-digit dialing by default, but some older equipment may still use 7 digits. Please contact your medical alert or security provider if you do not know whether your equipment needs to be reprogrammed to accommodate for the upcoming change to 10-digit dialing.

You may also want to check your personal and business stationery and checks, advertising materials, websites, contact information, and personal or pet ID tags to ensure the area code is included.

You will need to continue to dial 1-800-273-TALK to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline until July 16, 2022, at which time the 988 three digit number will be activated.

What will remain the same?
